Description
Araxos Air Base is located in northwestern Achaea, Greece, approximately 29 km southwest of Patras. An auxiliary military airfield was established at the location in 1939. Construction of the military base began around 1958, and the facility became operational in 1962.
The base is operated by the 116 Combat Wing of the Hellenic Air Force. Stationed units include the 335 Bombing Squadron and the 336 Bombing Squadron. These units operate F-16C/D Block 52+ aircraft. The military installations are accessed through Lakkopetra, and the base shares a runway with the civilian Araxos Airport.
Infrastructure includes Hardened Aircraft Shelters featuring the WS3 Weapon Storage and Security System. Between 1978 and 2001, the base hosted the NATO 345 Air Munitions Company. This unit managed U.S. B61 nuclear munitions intended for delivery by Hellenic Air Force A-7H aircraft under NATO nuclear sharing arrangements. The munitions were stored in vaults within the aircraft shelters.
