Description
Bagdogra Airport operates as a civil enclave at the Bagdogra Air Force Station of the Indian Air Force. It serves the city of Siliguri in West Bengal, India. The airbase is home to the IAF No. 20 Wing, the No. 8 Squadron, which operates Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21 FL fighter aircraft, and a Helicopter Unit. Along with the airbase at Hasimara, it is responsible for combat air operations over Northern West Bengal, Sikkim, and Bhutan. The base handles all military air traffic for the Indian Army's XXXIII Corps, which is based nearby in Sukna. The Indian Air Force maintains the Air Traffic Control (ATC) and the runway. In 2013, the IAF permitted night landings by civilian aircraft. The airport underwent a 14-day closure in April 2022 for runway refurbishment. A new terminal building is under construction, expected to be completed by March 2027, which will include 16 parking bays, 10 aerobridges, and a parallel taxiway to the runway.
