Description
Base aérienne 115 Orange-Caritat « Capitaine de Seynes » is a French Air and Space Force base located five kilometers east of Orange in Vaucluse. The base occupies 371 hectares and features a 2,400-meter concrete runway. Aviation fuel is supplied via the NATO Central Europe Pipeline System. Inaugurated in July 1939, the base was occupied by the Luftwaffe from 1942 to 1944 and then hosted Royal Air Force units in 1944. The 5th Fighter Wing was created here on April 1, 1945. During the Cold War, it saw various units and aircraft, including De Havilland Vampire, SNCASE Mistral, Mystère IIC, Mystère IVA, Dassault Super Mystère B2, Fouga Magister, Mirage IIIC, Mirage F1C, and Mirage 2000C/RDI. The base was officially named "Capitaine de Seynes" on May 26, 1989. After a period of restructuring and the temporary inactivation of the Escadron de chasse 2/5 Île-de-France in 2022, the base underwent modernization works to accommodate Rafale aircraft. Since July 18, 2024, it hosts the Escadron de chasse 1/5 Vendée, equipped with Rafale, and the reactivated 5th Fighter Wing. A second Rafale squadron is planned for creation by 2028. Other units permanently stationed at the base include the Escadron d'Hélicoptères 1/65 Alpilles (on Fennec) and the Centre d'instruction des équipages d'hélicoptères 00.341 Maurienne. The base also houses the Centre de préparation opérationnelle du combattant de l'armée de l'air (CPOCAA), which provides training for fusiliers commandos and military technicians, and the Commando parachutiste de l'air n°20 (CPA 20), specializing in air support, personnel recovery, and force protection. These ground units are located in the Quartier Geille, which also features a museum dedicated to air commandos.
