Description
Base Presidente Eduardo Frei Montalva is a Chilean Antarctic research station and air base located on King George Island in the South Shetland Islands. Established in 1969, it is the largest Chilean base in Antarctica and serves as the main logistics hub for the country's Antarctic operations.
The base is home to Teniente Rodolfo Marsh Martin Aerodrome, one of the few airports in Antarctica with a permanent runway. It is operated by the Chilean Air Force and supports year-round scientific research, military logistics, and international flights to Antarctica. The base maintains a population of around 80 personnel in summer and 20 in winter.
