Description
Bezmer Air Base is located in Yambol Province, Bulgaria, situated between the villages of Bezmer and Bolyarsko. The site was first utilized during World War I by the Imperial German Air Service as a base for zeppelin reconnaissance and bombing missions. In 1955, the installation became the station for the 22 Fighter Air Regiment. This unit was later redesignated as the 22 Fighter-Bomber Air Regiment and eventually became the 22 Attack Air Base.
The Bulgarian Air Force operates the facility, which houses the 22 Attack Air Base. Its mission encompasses ground attack and reconnaissance operations. Under the 2006 Defense Cooperation Agreement between the United States and Bulgaria, the installation is designated as a joint US-Bulgarian military base.
The base operates squadrons of Su-25 ground attack aircraft. It has also served as a base for Su-22M-4 and Su-22UM-3K reconnaissance aircraft. Operational infrastructure includes communication, information, and navigation systems. The airfield utilizes a concrete runway surface.
