Description
Brasília Air Force Base (ALA1) is located in Lago Sul, Federal District, 11 km from downtown Brasília. The facility operates adjacent to the Brasília-President Juscelino Kubitschek International Airport. The base originated on November 27, 1957, when the Brasília Detachment of Air Force Base was established by Decree 42,697. It was officially constituted as Brasília Air Force Base on December 4, 1963, under Decree 53,077, and dedicated on January 1, 1964.
The base is owned and controlled by the Brazilian Air Force and is currently commanded by Brig. José Ricardo de Meneses Rocha. It hosts the Special Transportation Group (GTE), the unit responsible for the transport of the President of Brazil. The GTE operates the Brazilian Presidential Airplane and the Brazilian Presidential Helicopter, utilizing aircraft types including the VC-1, VC-2, VC-99A/C-99A, VH-35, and VH-36 Caracal.
The 6th Squadron of Air Transportation (6°ETA), known as Guará, is also stationed at the facility. This unit operates the C-95BM and CM Bandeirante, C-98A Grand Caravan, C-97 Brasília, and U-100 Phenom. Historical aircraft previously based at the installation include the BAe VU-93 Dominie, Gates VU-35/U-35 Learjet, Vickers VC-90 Viscount, and Boeing VC-96.
