Description

Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport is located 16 kilometers southeast of central Budapest. Established in 1938 to replace the constrained Budaörs Airport, the facility was designed for joint civil, military, and sporting use. Construction of military infrastructure began in 1940, with flight operations commencing in 1943. Following Soviet occupation in late 1944, the airport underwent reconstruction for civil aviation starting in 1947. Operations resumed in 1950 under the Hungarian-Soviet Civil Aviation Co. Ltd. (MASZOVLET). The facility served as the hub for the national carrier Malév from 1954 until the airline ceased operations in 2012.

Budapest Airport Ltd. operates the facility. It serves as the hub for Wizz Air and Smartwings Hungary, and as an operating base for Ryanair. The airport facilitates international traffic to Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and the Far East.

The airport occupies 1,515 hectares and maintains two parallel runways. Infrastructure consists of Terminal 1, Terminal 2A, and Terminal 2B, along with a connecting facility known as the Sky Court. A technical base for aircraft maintenance is located on-site. The facility includes a control tower commissioned in 1977. Between 1989 and 1991, the airport functioned as a logistical transit hub for Soviet emigrants moving from Moscow to Tel Aviv.
