Description
Burgas Airport is located in southeast Bulgaria, near the Sarafovo district, 10 kilometers from the city center. The facility was established on 27 June 1937 following an agreement between the French company CIDNA and the Bulgarian government. Domestic flight operations commenced on 29 June 1947, with Balkan Bulgarian Airlines utilizing Junkers Ju 52/3m aircraft for routes to Plovdiv and Sofia. The site underwent expansion in the 1950s and 1960s, which included the construction of a concrete runway. The airport attained international status in 1970.
The facility is state-owned and operated by Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD under a 40-year concession awarded in 2006. It functions as an international terminal for the southern Bulgarian coast. Carriers operating at the facility include Ryanair, Jet2.com, TUI Airways, and Wizz Air. These airlines utilize various aircraft types, including the Airbus A321neo, Boeing 737 MAX 9, and Boeing 787-9.
Infrastructure includes Terminal 2, which became operational in December 2013. This terminal is equipped with 31 check-in counters, nine security lanes, eight departure gates, and 12 immigration stations. The airfield contains a concrete runway and taxiways A and H, with 3,500 square meters of taxiway rehabilitated in 2016. Additional facilities include an airfield lighting control system and a parking lot with 199 spaces. Ground transport connections include municipal bus services and a taxi terminal.
