Description
Callao Air Base is located in Callao, 11 kilometers northwest of the historic center of Lima. The facility was established in 1960 to replace Limatambo International Airport and was inaugurated as Lima International Airport on October 29, 1960. In June 1965, the installation was renamed Aeropuerto Internacional Jorge Chávez. The facility is operated by the Lima Airport Partners consortium, while the Peruvian Corporation of Airports and Commercial Aviation manages air traffic control.
The base functions as a hub for multiple aviation companies and serves as a center for international and domestic flight operations. Carriers operating from the site include Aerolíneas Argentinas, Air Europa, Arajet, Wingo, and Volaris. The location serves as a logistics center for air cargo operators and was historically the base of operations for Compañía de Aviación Faucett and Aeroperú.
Infrastructure at the site includes two runways and a control tower system. A second runway and a new control tower entered operation on April 3, 2023. A passenger terminal opened on June 1, 2025, while the original terminal building is utilized for logistics, private aviation, medical services, and administrative offices. Cargo facilities consist of the Air Cargo and Mail Center and the Lima Cargo City complex, which houses major air cargo operators. Specialized processing for perishable exports is conducted at a refrigerated warehouse operated by Frío Aéreo. Supporting infrastructure includes the Wyndham Costa del Sol hotel and the Peru Plaza Shopping Center. On-site facilities include the Sumaq VIP Lounge, Salón VIP Perú, and Salón VIP Club. The base also hosts Iperú information modules and multiple premium passenger lounges.
