Description

Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Greenwood is located in Greenwood, Nova Scotia. The facility was established between 1940 and 1942 as RAF Station Greenwood to serve as an airfield for the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. Initial operations involved training units utilizing Lockheed Hudson, Avro Anson, and Westland Lysander aircraft. During the Second World War, the base conducted maritime reconnaissance for anti-submarine activity in the western Atlantic. The installation transitioned to the Royal Canadian Air Force in July 1944, becoming RCAF Station Greenwood.

Following a period of reduced activity in 1946, the base resumed operations in April 1947. It was designated as the maritime reconnaissance training site for the Royal Canadian Air Force and became the station for 405 Squadron and 103 Rescue Unit. Throughout the Cold War, the base operated several aircraft types for maritime patrol, including modified Avro Lancaster bombers, the Lockheed P2V Neptune, and the CP-107 Argus. The facility was renamed CFB Greenwood in 1968. In 1991, following the closure of CFB Summerside, military personnel and units, including 413 Squadron, were transferred to the base.

14 Wing Greenwood is the current primary operator of the base. It serves as an installation for maritime patrol, surveillance, and search and rescue operations on the Atlantic coast. The base hosts squadrons of CP-140 Aurora aircraft used for anti-submarine warfare and long-range maritime surveillance. It also houses 413 Transport and Rescue Squadron, which operates CH-149 Cormorant helicopters and CC-130 Hercules aircraft for air-sea rescue and transport missions.

Infrastructure at the base includes facilities for the Royal Canadian Air Cadets summer training centre. The airfield functions as a forward deployment base for CF-188 Hornet fighter aircraft rotating from CFB Bagotville as part of NORAD security operations. Civilian aviation operations are permitted on-site via a lease agreement with the Municipality of Kings, with facilities managed by Freedom Aviation.
