Description

Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Trenton is located in Quinte West, Ontario, 175 km east of Toronto. Established in 1929 as RCAF Station Trenton, the facility officially opened in August 1931. It served as the primary flying training center by 1937 and was the largest training center of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan during the Second World War. The base was renamed CFB Trenton on February 1, 1968, following the unification of the Canadian Armed Forces.

Operated by the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), the base serves as the hub for Canadian military air transport operations. The primary lodger unit is 8 Wing, which operates multiple squadrons including 424 Transport and Rescue Squadron, 426 Transport Training Squadron, 429 Transport Squadron, 436 Transport Squadron, and 437 Transport Squadron. Other units include 2 Air Movement Squadron and 8 Air Maintenance Squadron. The base also supports geographically separated units, specifically 412 Transport Squadron in Ottawa and 440 Transport Squadron in Yellowknife.

Lodger units independent of 8 Wing include the Canadian Forces Aerospace Warfare Centre, the Aerospace and Telecommunications Engineering Support Squadron, and 8 Air Communications and Control Squadron. The base hosts the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Trenton and the Canadian Mission Control Centre, which coordinate search and rescue operations for central and Arctic Canada. Army units stationed at the base include the Canadian Army Advanced Warfare Centre and the Canadian Joint Incident Response Unit.

Infrastructure consists of an air traffic control tower, the Air Mobility Training Centre, a Material Distribution Centre, and several hangars designated as Federal Heritage buildings. Aircraft operated from the base include CC-130 Hercules, CC-150 Polaris, CC-330, CC-177 Globemaster III, and CC-138 transport aircraft, alongside CH-146 Griffon search and rescue helicopters. The base also provides support for the CC-144 Challenger VIP transport fleet and hosts a bomb disposal team. Additional facilities include the National Air Force Museum of Canada and the Trenton Cadet Training Centre. The airport is classified as an airport of entry staffed by the Canada Border Services Agency for emergencies and MEDEVACs.
