Description
Chiang Mai International Airport is located in the Suthep subdistrict of Mueang Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand. The site originated as an airstrip in the early 1920s and commenced operations as Suthep Airport in 1934. Before World War II, the facility supported postal delivery services and limited military operations. During World War II, the airport was occupied by Japanese forces and was subsequently targeted by British and United States air forces. Post-war civilian service began in 1947 with Siamese Airways. The runway consisted of grass or dirt surfaces until the late 1950s.
The facility is managed by Airports of Thailand and operates as a joint-use civil-military airport. The Royal Thai Air Force bases the 411 Fighter Squadron of the 41st Wing at the facility. Historically, the airport hosted a detachment of the Royal Air Force No. 20 Squadron from September 1961 to February 1970, which utilized Hunter FGA 9 aircraft. In 2008, the airport served as an alternative landing site for international carriers, including China Airlines and Swiss International Air Lines, during the closure of Suvarnabhumi Airport.
Infrastructure includes domestic and international passenger terminals. In 2014, the apron was expanded to accommodate larger aircraft and the international arrival and domestic departure halls were enlarged. The airport has maintained 24-hour operations since April 2014. Current aircraft types hosted at the facility include those operated by the Royal Thai Air Force 41st Wing.
