Description

Dover Air Force Base (Dover AFB) is a United States Air Force base located southeast of Dover, Delaware, under the operational control of Air Mobility Command (AMC). Construction of the facility, initially named Municipal Airport, Dover Airdrome, began in March 1941, and it opened on December 17, 1941. It was converted to a U.S. Army Air Corps airfield shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor and was renamed Dover Air Force Base on January 13, 1948. The base was reactivated in 1950 due to the Korean War and Cold War expansion, and in 1952, it was transferred to the Military Air Transport Service (MATS), becoming home to the 1607th Air Transport Wing (Heavy).

Currently, the 436th Airlift Wing serves as the host wing, operating the largest air freight terminal in the Department of Defense. The base is also home to the AMC-gained 512th Airlift Wing of the Air Force Reserve Command. These units operate both the C-5M Super Galaxy and C-17 Globemaster III aircraft. Flying squadrons include the 3rd, 9th, 326th, and 709th Airlift Squadrons. Dover AFB is notable for hosting the largest military mortuary in the Department of Defense, the Charles C. Carson Center for Mortuary Affairs, which processes the remains of service members killed in combat and has handled remains from incidents such as the Jonestown mass murder/suicide and Space Shuttle disasters. The base features two runways: 14/32, measuring 3,933 meters with asphalt/concrete surface, and 01/19, measuring 2,927 meters with a concrete surface. The Air Mobility Command Museum is also located at Dover AFB.
