Description
Galeão Air Force Base is located on Governor Island, 20 kilometers from downtown Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The installation shares facilities with the Rio de Janeiro/Galeão International Airport. The site originated on May 10, 1923, as a School of Naval Aviation near Galeão Beach. Following the creation of the Air Force Ministry, the facility was redesignated Galeão Air Force Base on May 22, 1941. During this period, the infrastructure was expanded with the construction of a terminal and hangars. Starting in August 1942, the aerodrome supported Allied military operations during World War II. Post-war, the base handled international civilian air traffic until 1952, when public and military services were separated into different facilities.
The base is owned and operated by the Brazilian Air Force. It serves as a station for multiple transport and logistics units. The 1st Squadron of the 1st Transportation Group operates Embraer KC-390 and Lockheed C-130 Hercules aircraft. The 1st Squadron of the 2nd Transportation Group utilizes Embraer C-99 A and C-97 Brasília aircraft. The 2nd Squadron of the 2nd Transportation Group operates Airbus KC-30 aircraft, while the 3rd Squadron of Air Transportation operates Embraer C-95 B and BM Bandeirante aircraft.
Infrastructure includes the Brazilian Air Force Passenger Services Terminal, informally known as the Terminal do Correio Aéreo Nacional. This facility is located in the original 1952 passenger terminal and handles passengers for military-operated flights. The base maintains original 1941 hangars and terminal buildings alongside modern support facilities for its transport squadrons.
