Description
Ghedi Air Base, officially known as "Luigi Olivari" Ghedi Air Base, is a military airport located in Ghedi, near Brescia, in northern Italy. Constructed in 1909, the base is owned by Italy and operated by the Aeronautica Militare Italiana (Italian Air Force). Its coordinates are 45°25′56″N 010°16′04″E, with an elevation of 101 meters above mean sea level. The base features a single asphalt runway, designated 13/31, which is 2,991 meters (9,813 feet) in length.
Ghedi Air Base serves as the home for the 6º Stormo of the Italian Air Force. This wing comprises several units, including the 102º Gruppo (known as Papero), the 154º Gruppo (known as Diavoli Rossi), and the 155º Gruppo (known as Le linci). These units are equipped with the Tornado IDS aircraft.
A notable feature of Ghedi Air Base is its role as one of six active air bases in Europe that house B61 nuclear bombs. These weapons are stored in underground WS3 Weapon Storage and Security Systems located within aircraft shelters. As of 2019, the base reportedly housed more than 40 nuclear weapons. Since 2017, the base commander has been Italian Air Force Colonel Luca Maineri. Ghedi Air Base is also listed as a support facility for United States Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa (USAFE-AFAFRICA).
