Description
Great Falls International Airport, identified by IATA: GTF and ICAO: KGTF, is a public/military airport situated three miles southwest of central Great Falls, Montana. The airport was initiated in November 1928. During World War II, it was leased by the U.S. War Department, becoming Gore Field and serving as a home for the 7th Ferrying Group of the U.S. Army Air Forces. Over 7,500 bombers and fighter aircraft transited through Great Falls en route to Europe and the Pacific during this period. The U.S. Army acquired additional land and facilities before the airport was deeded back to the City of Great Falls in June 1948, with a stipulation for military reversion in emergencies, which was released in 1961. A new terminal was constructed in 1975, and runways, aprons, and taxiways were updated. The airport is home to Great Falls Air National Guard Base, which hosts the Montana Air National Guard's 120th Airlift Wing (120 AW). This unit, operationally-gained by Air Mobility Command, reequipped with the Lockheed C-130 Hercules in 2014 for medium airlift missions, having previously flown the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle as the 120th Fighter Wing. While Malmstrom Air Force Base, home to the 341st Missile Wing, is nearby, Great Falls ANGB provides fixed-wing aircraft support as Malmstrom's runway is closed to such traffic. The airport covers 2,113 acres with an elevation of 1,122 meters (3,680 feet) and features two asphalt runways: 03/21, measuring 3,201 meters (10,502 feet), and 17/35, measuring 1,838 meters (6,030 feet). The terminal houses a collection of 883 model airplanes.
