Description

Hamadan Airbase, also designated as Shahrokhi Airbase or Noje Airbase, is an Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force (IRIAF) installation located 47 kilometers north of Hamadan in the Central District of Kabudarahang County. The base is named after Captain Mohammad Noje, the first IRIAF pilot killed in action following the 1979 Iranian Revolution. Historically, the facility served as the site of the Nojeh coup plot in 1980.

The IRIAF serves as the primary operator of the facility. Since August 2016, the base has facilitated international operations, specifically hosting the Russian Air Force for missions related to the Syrian conflict. During this period, the base hosted squadrons of Tupolev Tu-22M long-range bombers and Sukhoi Su-34 strike fighters. These aircraft conducted bombing missions in Syria to support the Syrian Arab Army in operations against the Islamic State and Syrian opposition forces. This deployment marked the first time since 1979 that Iran permitted a foreign military to utilize its territory for combat operations. Use of the base by Russian forces has been characterized by Iranian officials as temporary and conducted at the request of the Syrian government.

Infrastructure at the base supports a large residential population and is classified as a village in national census documentation. The population of the base was recorded at 7,576 in 2006, increasing to 9,292 in 2011, before being measured at 5,098 in 2016. It remains the most populous settlement in the Raheb Rural District of Kabudarahang County. The facility is equipped to host heavy bomber and strike fighter aircraft, providing the necessary logistics for long-range aerial operations.
