Description
Holzdorf Air Base, also designated Fliegerhorst Holzdorf or Schönewalde/Holzdorf Air Base, is a military airfield operated by the German Air Force (Luftwaffe). The facility is located 3 kilometers east of Holzdorf in Saxony-Anhalt, with the majority of the installation situated within the city of Schönewalde in Brandenburg.
The Air Forces of the National People's Army (NVA) selected the site for a new airbase in 1968. Construction concluded in 1974, and the facility reached operational airfield status by 1980. In November 1982, the NVA relocated Jagdfliegergeschwader 1 to Holzdorf from Cottbus-Nord Airport. Erich Honecker visited the site in August 1985 to inspect the repair hall of Fighter Wing 1 "Fritz Schmenkel."
The base hosts Helicopter Wing 64 of the Luftwaffe. It previously served as the station for Support Squadron 1 of the German Army Aviation Corps until that unit was dissolved in 2013 as part of the 2011 Bundeswehr reorganization. Current infrastructure projects include the construction of facilities for the Arrow 3 missile defense system, which is scheduled for completion in 2028.
