Description

Jacksonville International Airport (JAX/KJAX) is a civil-military public airport located 13 miles north of Downtown Jacksonville in Duval County, Florida. It is owned and operated by the Jacksonville Aviation Authority. Construction of the airport began in 1965, and it officially opened on September 1, 1968, succeeding Imeson Field. The initial design featured separate areas for departing and arriving passengers, a layout that has since been modified. The airport experienced slow growth initially, serving two million passengers annually by 1982, which increased to over five million by 1999, prompting an expansion plan approved in 2000. This expansion included rebuilding the landside terminal and consolidating security checkpoints, completed by 2005. Further phases involved rebuilding Concourses A and C, with Concourse B being demolished in 2009 due to economic downturn and is slated for reconstruction by the end of 2026. The airport covers 7,911 acres and features two concrete runways: 08/26, measuring 10,000 feet (3,048 m), and 14/32, measuring 7,701 feet (2,347 m). The terminal includes baggage claim, ticketing, a mezzanine with shops and restaurants, and Concourses A and C, each with 10 gates. Military facilities at Jacksonville Air National Guard Base are concurrent with the airport, hosting the 125th Fighter Wing of the Florida Air National Guard, which operates F-15C and F-15D Eagle aircraft, with F-35A Lightning aircraft arriving in 2025. The base provides a USAF Crash Fire Rescue station and employs approximately 300 full-time and 1,000 part-time military personnel.
