Description

Joint Base Anacostia–Bolling (JBAB) is a 905-acre military installation situated in Southwest Washington, D.C. Established on October 1, 2010, it was formed by consolidating Naval Support Facility Anacostia and Bolling Air Force Base, adhering to recommendations from the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission. The base is owned by the Department of Defense and operated by the U.S. Air Force, falling under the control of the Air Force District of Washington. Its construction dates back to 1917–1918.

Historically, the area was inhabited by the Nacotchtank people. The site of Bolling Field, which later became Bolling Air Force Base, has been a Department of Defense asset since 1917. Naval Support Facility Anacostia began as a seaplane testing facility in 1918. Fixed-wing aircraft operations ceased at both installations in 1962 due to congested airspace with Washington National Airport. However, the facilities continued to serve various capacities.

JBAB provides installation support to approximately 17,000 military and civilian personnel and their families, as well as 48 mission and tenant units. Notable units include the 11th Wing (host), the Defense Intelligence Agency Headquarters, the Coast Guard Station Washington, D.C., the White House Communications Agency, and Marine Helicopter Squadron 1 (HMX-1), which supports presidential transport operations. The base also hosts ceremonial units such as the United States Air Force Honor Guard and The United States Air Force Band. The sole aeronautical facility is a 30-by-30-meter helipad. In October 2020, management of the base transferred from the U.S. Navy to the Air Force.
