Description

Joint Base Anacostia–Bolling (JBAB) is a 905-acre military installation located in Southwest Washington, D.C. The base was established on 1 October 2010 following the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission's recommendation to consolidate the adjoining Naval Support Facility Anacostia and Bolling Air Force Base. The site has been a Department of Defense asset since 1917. Bolling Field officially opened in 1918 and was later designated as Bolling Air Force Base in 1948. Naval operations at the site also began in 1918 with seaplane testing. Fixed-wing flight operations at both original installations were deactivated in 1962 due to airspace congestion involving nearby Washington National Airport.

The United States Air Force operates the installation under the Air Force District of Washington. The 11th Wing serves as the host unit, providing installation support for approximately 17,000 military and civilian personnel and 48 tenant units. The base mission includes providing ceremonial support to the White House, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Air Force leadership.

Major units stationed at the installation include the Defense Intelligence Agency Headquarters, the United States Air Force Honor Guard, the United States Air Force Band, and the United States Navy Ceremonial Guard. Other resident organizations include the White House Communications Agency, the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) Washington Field Office, the Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General, and Coast Guard Station Washington, D.C.

Aeronautical facilities are limited to a 100-by-100-foot helipad. The base supports Marine Helicopter Squadron One (HMX-1) for presidential transport operations. Aircraft types operated from or hosted at the installation include the VH-3D Sea King, VH-60N White Hawk, UH-60N Black Hawk, UH-3D Sea King, and MV-22B Osprey. The installation also houses the LEARN D.C. charter school and is situated adjacent to the Naval Research Laboratory.
