Description
Kanoya Air Field is a military aerodrome located 2.8 kilometers southwest of the city of Kanoya in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. The Kanoya Air Group formed at the site on April 1, 1936, as a medium bomber unit of the Imperial Japanese Navy. The group operated Mitsubishi G3M bombers during the Second Sino-Japanese War and transitioned to Mitsubishi G4M bombers in September 1941. During the Pacific War, the airfield served as the main base for Operation Kikusui kamikaze operations. Between September 1945 and November 1948, the facility was under the control of the United States Fifth Air Force. The National Police Reserve established a garrison at the site in 1950, and the installation was transferred to the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force on November 21, 1955.
The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force currently operates the base. It hosts the 1st Air Group, the Kanoya Educational Aviation Group, and the Kanoya Aircraft Workshop. Facilities at the site include the Kanoya Air Base Museum. The airfield is equipped with an Instrument Landing System.
In April 2016, a Japan Air Self-Defense Force U-125 aircraft crashed near the base while performing a check of the navigation aid system. In July 2018, it was announced that the base would be used by the United States military. Under this agreement, United States Marine Corps KC-130 aerial tankers utilize the facility.
