Description
Kaufbeuren Air Base (Fliegerhorst Kaufbeuren) is a German Air Force installation. Established in 1935 as a Luftwaffe station, the site was seized by the United States Army in May 1945. Following the seizure, the 289th Combat Engineers and the 225th Anti-Aircraft Searchlight Battalion occupied the facility. Between July 1945 and April 1946, the 55th Fighter Group operated P-51 Mustangs from the airfield.
The 60th Troop Carrier Wing, including the 10th, 11th, and 12th Troop Carrier Squadrons, was assigned to the base from July 1948 until October 1949. These units operated C-47 Skytrain and C-54 Skymaster aircraft in support of the Berlin Airlift. During the early 1950s, the base functioned as a communications station under the 7320th Air Force Wing. The 7330th Flying Training Wing was established at the site in 1955 to train pilots for the reconstituted German Air Force.
The United States returned the facility to the West German government on 16 December 1957. Missile Group 11 was activated at the base in February 1958, equipped with MGM-1 Matador cruise missiles. The facility served as an active airbase until the 1990s. It currently functions as a non-flying training facility and hosts the Luftwaffe Technical School 1.
