Description

Koltsovo International Airport, located 16 km southeast of Yekaterinburg, Russia, serves both civil and military aviation. Its original aerodrome was constructed between 1928 and 1930 by the Air Force Institute of the USSR, primarily as a military aerodrome. In 1932, the 33rd air division was transferred to Koltsovo. During World War II, a 1 km runway was built in three months, and on May 15, 1942, the USSR's first jet engine plane, the BI-1, completed its maiden flight from Koltsovo. The airport gained domestic civil status on July 10, 1943, becoming the first airport in the USSR with both civil and military status. It served as a joint in a classified route for importing C-47 aircraft into the USSR during the war and later for relocating military aircraft to the Pacific Front. In 1951, the airfield underwent reconstruction, and in 1956, runways were extended and reinforced to accommodate larger aircraft. In 1987, a second runway was completed. In October 1993, Koltsovo was granted international status. The airport underwent a large-scale reconstruction program from 2003 to 2009. As of 2024, it is one of Russia's busiest airports. The base is home to the 32nd Independent Composite Transport Aviation Regiment, part of the 14th Air and Air Defence Forces Army. The airport has two runways, 08R/26L and 08L/26R, which are equipped with OVI-1 lighting facilities and can handle various aircraft types.
