Description
Located in the suburb of Barca, 6 km south of Košice, Slovakia, Košice International Airport occupies an area of 3.50 km². Construction of the facility began in the 1950s, with the first passenger terminal, hangar, and control tower established in 1954. Direct flight operations between Košice and Prague commenced in 1955. The facility’s role in military aviation was expanded in 1973 with the foundation of the SNP Air Force Academy. Infrastructure upgrades between 1974 and 1977 included the installation of lighting systems to meet CAT II specifications and runway extensions. Following further runway and equipment reconstructions in the early 1990s, military aviation activities at the airport ceased in 2004.
The airport is currently operated by Letisko Košice - Airport Košice, a.s. Ownership is divided between KSC Holding (66%), which is majority-owned by Vienna-Schwechat Airport, and the Slovak Republic (34%). As the second largest international airport in Slovakia, it facilitates scheduled, charter, domestic, and international flight operations. Carriers utilizing the facility include Austrian Airlines, LOT Polish Airlines, Ryanair, Smartwings, Swiss International Air Lines, and Wizz Air. Routes connect the facility to regional hubs and international destinations including Vienna, Warsaw, Prague, Zurich, London, and Dublin.
Infrastructure includes Terminal 1, which has a total area of 4,456 m² and contains international and domestic departure gates, a business lounge, and commercial service areas. The handling area was expanded in 2007 to increase the number of aircraft stands. Support facilities include three camera-monitored parking lots for short-term and long-term use. Ground transport access is provided by a highway connecting to the regional ring road and a dedicated public bus route.
