Description
Kép Air Base is a Vietnam People's Air Force (VPAF) airfield located near Kép, Bắc Giang province, approximately 60 km northeast of Hanoi. The facility was improved in 1965 to accommodate jet fighter and photo-reconnaissance operations, initially hosting MiG-15 and MiG-17 aircraft. By April 1966, the VPAF began deploying MiG-21s to the base from Phúc Yên Air Base.
During the Vietnam War, the airfield was a target for U.S. aerial operations. It was the site of the first U.S. airstrike on a VPAF airfield on April 24, 1967, conducted by aircraft from VA-112 and VA-144. On May 1, 1967, a VA-76 A-4 Skyhawk shot down a MiG-17 during a sortie against the base. From late 1967 through 1968, a regiment-sized unit of North Korean pilots known as Doan Z operated from the facility. U.S. forces targeted the base during Operation Linebacker in June 1972 and again on the first night of Operation Linebacker II in December 1972 to suppress fighter interceptions.
The Vietnam People's Air Force operates the base, which hosts the 927th and 940th Fighter Regiments. Units based at the facility operate Su-30MK2, Su-27SK/UBK, and Yak-130 aircraft. The infrastructure consists of concrete runways and support facilities for multi-role fighter and training operations.
