Description
Lanzarote Air Base is located in San Bartolomé, Las Palmas, situated five kilometers southwest of Arrecife on the island of Lanzarote. The facility originated in the 1930s as an airfield at Llanos de Guacimeta to provide connections to the Spanish mainland and other islands. The initial landing at the site occurred on July 24, 1941, by a Junkers Ju 52. The Spanish Air Force subsequently established a permanent aerodrome at the location for defense purposes.
The facility began accepting provisional civil traffic in 1946. Infrastructure includes a control center and a passenger terminal commissioned in 1970. Additional facilities include Terminal 1, opened in 1999, and Terminal 2, which consists of the original terminal repurposed for inter-island traffic. The site is equipped with Distance Measuring Equipment (DME), an Instrument Landing System (ILS), and VHF Omnidirectional Range (VOR) facilities. A fire station is also operational on the premises.
The installation is operated by AENA. It serves as a location for both domestic and international civil aviation while maintaining its historical designation as an air base. The original passenger terminal used between 1946 and 1970 currently houses an aeronautical museum.
