Description

Leuchars Station is a British Army installation and airfield located in Leuchars, Fife, Scotland. The site's military association dates back to 1911 with military balloons, and it officially opened as a Royal Air Force station on 16 March 1920, known as RAF Leuchars. Historically, it served as a RNAS fleet fighter station and later a RAF Coastal Command airfield. During the Cold War and beyond, it housed fighter aircraft responsible for policing northern UK airspace.

In July 2011, it was announced that RAF Leuchars would close as an RAF station as part of the Strategic Defence and Security Review 2010. Control of the site was transferred to the British Army on 31 March 2015, and it was renamed Leuchars Station. Typhoon aircraft previously based there moved to RAF Lossiemouth. The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, 2 Close Support Battalion of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, and 110 Provost Company, Royal Military Police, relocated to Leuchars Station.

Currently, the primary Army unit based at Leuchars is the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, a cavalry regiment specializing in reconnaissance, equipped with Jackal 2 armoured fighting vehicles and Coyote tactical support vehicles. Other Army units include 2 Close Support Battalion REME, 110 Provost Company RMP, and elements of 71 Engineer Regiment (Army Reserve).

The station continues to host several RAF units, including No. 612 (County of Aberdeen) Squadron RAuxAF, the East of Scotland Universities Air Squadron (operating Grob Tutor T1 aircraft), and No. 12 Air Experience Flight. The airfield is maintained by the RAF as a diversion airfield for military aircraft. In late 2020, the Ministry of Defence confirmed plans to increase both civilian and military usage of the airfield, including re-installation of F34 fuel facilities, though no aircraft would be permanently based there.
