Description
Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport is located in Zgornji Brnik, 24 kilometers northwest of Ljubljana and 9.5 kilometers east of Kranj at the foothills of the Kamnik–Savinja Alps. Established in December 1963 to replace the Polje Airport, the facility commenced regular flight operations in January 1964. Formerly designated as Brnik Airport, it was renamed in 2007. During the 1991 conflict following Slovenia's declaration of independence, the airport was a site of military operations conducted by the Yugoslav People's Army, including aerial bombing. The facility was privatized in 2014 and is owned and operated by Fraport Slovenia d.o.o.
The airport serves as the primary international aviation facility in Slovenia. Operations are managed by Fraport Slovenia d.o.o. and include scheduled passenger services and cargo logistics. Carriers operating at the site include Air France, Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines, and Air Serbia. Cargo operations are maintained by entities such as DHL Aviation, ASL Airlines, and Swiftair Hellas.
Infrastructure consists of a terminal complex totaling 28,587 square meters, following an expansion completed in 2021. The facility includes 22 check-in desks, five security lines, and five jetway/air bridge connections. Technical equipment includes an Instrument Landing System (ILS) Category IIIb, alongside Non-Directional Beacon (NDB) and VHF Omnidirectional Range (VOR) approach systems. The airfield features passenger aprons, aircraft maintenance aprons, and a cargo terminal. The site is accessed via the A2 motorway.
