Description
Maizuru Air Base is located in the Nagahama District of Maizuru City, Kansai region. The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force established the facility to support aviation requirements on the Sea of Japan. Construction began in 1996, and the airfield was completed on 22 March 2001.
The base is operated by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and serves as the aviation installation for the 23rd Air Group, which operates under the 21st Air Group. Other resident units include the Maizuru Maintenance and Supply Detachment and the Maizuru Air Base Detachment. The base provides facilities for aircraft assigned to escort vessels homeported at Maizuru.
Infrastructure at the installation includes a runway, control tower, and hangar facilities. The base hosts squadrons of SH-60K patrol helicopters. Historically, the site hosted the Maizuru Air Division and the 123rd Air Corps. The SH-60J was operated at the base until its retirement from the unit in March 2015. The 23rd Air Group was activated at the installation on 26 March 2008 following the reorganization and upgrade of the previous Maizuru Air Detachment.
