Description
Minsk National Airport, formerly designated Minsk-2, is situated 42 km east of Minsk within the Smalyavichy Raion and administratively subordinated to the Kastrychnitski District. Construction of the facility commenced in 1977. The aerodrome reached operational status in 1981, with the airport formally opening in 1982. The facility's foundation is dated to July 1, 1983, following the establishment of the Second Joint Aviation Division of Minsk by the USSR Ministry of Civil Aviation.
The airport functions as the primary hub for the national carrier Belavia and supports cargo operations for TAE Avia, Genex, and Rubystar Airways. Since May 2021, Belarusian airlines based at the facility have been restricted from European Union airspace, and several European carriers have terminated flights to the installation. The airport consists of two runways, the second of which opened in May 2019.
Infrastructure includes a modernized four-story passenger terminal of brutalist design. The facility incorporates 43 check-in counters and 13 departure gates, some featuring jet bridges. Maintenance and administrative functions occupy the first and third floors of the terminal. Ground transport is maintained via the M2 motorway. While a railway link operated between 2014 and 2017, the infrastructure was dismantled to facilitate runway expansion.
