Description
Miranshah Airfield, also known as Dardoni Aerodrome, is a joint civil and military installation situated in the North Waziristan District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. The British government established the site as a Royal Air Force (RAF) base in November 1923, repurposing a 1905 mud-brick fort originally occupied by the Tochi Scouts. The airfield supported British air operations during the 3rd Afghan War and subsequent regional conflicts through the 1920s and 1930s. Between 1937 and 1947, the station hosted rotational detachments from RAF and Indian Air Force (IAF) squadrons, including Nos. 1, 2, 5, 20, 27, 28, 31, 39, and 60. IAF officers commanded the base from 1943 until 1947 under the administration of RAF Kohat.
The facility is owned by the Ministry of Defence and operated by the Pakistan Air Force (PAF). Following the establishment of Pakistan, the PAF and the Frontier Corps utilized the airfield for counter-insurgency operations. The base has hosted units such as the PAF No. 14 Fighter-bomber Squadron. It currently maintains a role for both military and civil aviation.
The original infrastructure featured a high-walled fort containing headquarters, hangars, and an officers' mess. Aircraft were stored within the fort and taxied through its gates to reach the airstrip. By 1958, the airfield included eight hangars, two concrete or macadam runways, and fuel storage for 10,000 gallons. The base provides Category "A" maintenance services and is situated adjacent to a weapons firing range and the Dardoni Camp military installation. The airfield has hosted various aircraft types, including the Westland Wapiti, Hawker Hart, Hawker Hurricane, Supermarine Spitfire, Hawker Fury, and General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon.
