Description

Morozovsk is a military air base located in Rostov Oblast, Russia. It is owned by the Ministry of Defence and operated by the Russian Aerospace Forces, falling under the control of the 4th Air and Air Defence Forces Army, Southern Military District. The base has been in use since before 1940. It is currently home to the 559th Bomber Aviation Regiment, which, as of 2022, operated three squadrons of Sukhoi Su-34 aircraft as part of the 1st Guards Composite Aviation Division. The regiment relocated to Morozovsk from Finsterwalde, Germany, in 1993, at which time it was known as the 559th Fighter-Bomber Aviation Regiment. During the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, the 559th was forward deployed to Primorsko-Akhtarsk air base for a period. The air base has been targeted by drone attacks during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. On April 5, 2024, Ukraine claimed a drone attack destroyed or damaged several aircraft and resulted in casualties at the base, though Russian sources claimed all drones were thwarted and visual evidence of aircraft damage was not confirmed by ISW. Another Ukrainian drone strike on June 13–14, 2024, reportedly damaged two Su-34s. On August 2–3, 2024, a significant drone attack on the air base reportedly caused multiple explosions, including secondary explosions at an ammunition depot believed to store glide bombs and rockets.
