Description
Dong Hoi Airport is situated in Dong Thuan Ward, Quảng Bình Province, approximately 6 km north of Dong Hoi city on the North Central Coast of Vietnam. French colonists established the site as an unpaved airstrip in the 1930s to support operations during the First Indochina War, utilizing the facility to launch air raids against Viet Minh and Pathet Lao forces. During the Vietnam War, the Democratic Republic of Vietnam upgraded the airfield for use as a transit point for personnel and cargo moving to battlefields in South Vietnam and along the Ho Chi Minh trail. In 1975, the airfield supported the Ho Chi Minh Campaign as a landing site for military leadership. Following the conflict, the Vietnam People's Army maintained control of the facility for irregular military and rescue operations. Modern reconstruction of the airport commenced in August 2004, and it officially entered civilian service in May 2008.
The airport is owned and operated by the Airports Corporation of Vietnam. It functions as a commercial facility serving the North Central Coast region, providing air links between Quảng Bình Province and major domestic centers. Scheduled services are provided by carriers including Vietnam Airlines, VietJet Air, and Pacific Airlines.
The airport occupies a 173-hectare site on the coast of the South China Sea. Infrastructure includes a two-story passenger terminal, an air traffic control tower, and a 15,000-square-meter apron. Operational capabilities include an instrument landing system installed in 2013 and runway lighting for 24-hour operations, completed in 2014. The facility hosts aircraft types such as the Airbus A320, Airbus A321, and ATR-72.
