Description
Niš Air Base is the military section of Niš Constantine the Great Airport, the second-largest airport in Serbia, located 4 km northwest of downtown Niš. The facility hosts units of the Serbian Air Force and Air Defence alongside the Serbian-Russian Emergency Response Center and the Center for Aerial Firefighting Duties.
The site has deep historical roots in Serbian military aviation. In 1912, the Air Command, the first aerial unit of the Kingdom of Serbia, was established in Niš. Construction of the current airport began in 1923. After World War II, it served as a base for the 63rd Paratroop Brigade and the 119th Aviation Brigade of the Yugoslav Air Force.
Today, the base is home to the 119th Mixed Helicopter Squadron and multiple air defence missile brigades, serving as the primary air defence hub for southern Serbia.
