Description
PAF Base Samungli is located in Quetta, Balochistan, adjacent to Quetta International Airport. The British Raj established the facility in 1944, and it was initially used by No. 84 Squadron of the Royal Air Force operating Vultee Vengeance III aircraft during World War II. Following the independence of Pakistan, the site functioned as RPAF Station Samungli.
In October 1970, the facility was redesignated from a Care and Maintenance status to PAF Base Samungli. It transitioned from a satellite base to a main operating base on March 31, 1978. The No. 31 Wing was established at the base in May 1983. Air defense units were integrated into the installation starting in 1981 following the relocation of HQ No. 4 Sector and its component units to the area.
The Pakistan Air Force operates the base under the jurisdiction of Southern Air Command. Stationed units include 28 Squadron "Phoenixes" and 85 Squadron "Saviours." The base hosts a squadron of CAC/PAC JF-17 Thunder combat aircraft. The United States has utilized the facility for military logistical operations in support of regional activity since 2001.
Infrastructure at the base includes dedicated mess facilities for officers and airmen, domestic accommodation, and a 20-bed hospital.
