Description
Pingtung Air Base is located in Pingtung City, Pingtung County, Taiwan. The facility consists of two airfields established in November 1920 during the Japanese colonial administration. Initial operations focused on air policing of indigenous regions until 1927, when the Imperial Japanese Army Air Service 8th Air Squadron relocated to the base from Tachiarai, Fukuoka. The installation underwent expansion throughout the Japanese colonial era and the Pacific War before transitioning to Republic of China Air Force control in 1945.
Currently, the Republic of China Air Force operates the base as the station for the 6th Tactical Mixed Wing. The site previously supported commercial aviation during two distinct periods: from 1936 to 1942 under Japan Air Transport and Imperial Japanese Airways, and from 1993 to 2011 under TransAsia Airways and Uni Air.
The base infrastructure includes north and south airport sections. A passenger terminal facility was established at the south airport in 1995, and an additional passenger building was completed at the north airport in 2005. Commercial flight operations at the facility ceased in August 2011.
