Description
Primorsko-Akhtarsk is an air base of the Russian Aerospace Forces, located in Krasnodar Krai, Russia. It is part of the 4th Air and Air Defence Forces Army, Southern Military District, and is owned by the Ministry of Defence. The base was constructed in 1954 and first used by the 1689th regiment of the Yeysk aviation school. Currently, it is home to the 960th Assault Aviation Regiment (960th ShAP), which operates two squadrons of Sukhoi Su-25 SM/SM3 aircraft. During the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, the 559th Bomber Aviation Regiment deployed to Primorsko-Akhtarsk from Morozovsk air base with their Sukhoi Su-34s. On July 2, 2023, an explosion occurred near the airbase, with claims of a downed missile leaving a crater. Ukraine has stated that the airbase is used for launching Shahed-136 type drones and Kalibr missiles. Satellite imagery from December 2023 revealed decoy fighter jets painted on the hardstand, indicating a deception tactic against potential attacks.
