Description

Pyongyang International Airport, also known as Pyongyang Sunan International Airport, is the sole international airport serving the capital of North Korea. It is located in the Sunan District, Ryongbung-ri, approximately 25 kilometers from central Pyongyang.

Sunan Airfield was constructed following World War II to replace the Japanese-built Pyongyang Air Base and Mirim Airport. During the Korean War, United Nations forces occupied the site for seven weeks in late 1950 to conduct supply operations. In May 1953, the facility was inundated following the bombing of the Toksan Dam by the United States Air Force. The North Korean government initiated repairs and expansion of the airport following the 1953 armistice. A redevelopment project starting in 2012 resulted in the demolition of the original terminal and the construction of new facilities.

The airport is owned by the Government of North Korea and operated by the Civil Aviation Administration of Korea. It serves as the primary hub for Air Koryo. The carrier operates domestic flights to Chongjin, Hamhung, Samjiyon, and Wonsan, alongside international services to Beijing, Shenyang, and Vladivostok. Nordwind Airlines operates scheduled services to Moscow-Sheremetyevo. Historically, the airfield has hosted operations by Aeroflot, Air China, and Russian Sky Airlines.

The infrastructure consists of two passenger terminals, a control tower, and a dedicated VIP terminal. Terminal 1 serves domestic routes, while Terminal 2 handles international traffic and is equipped with jet bridges. A maintenance complex, established in 2016, is located approximately one kilometer from the runway area and includes aircraft hangars and housing for technical personnel. Ground transportation links include the Pyongyang-Hicheon Expressway and the Pyongui Line via Sunan Station, located 800 meters from the terminal. Aircraft types operated at the facility include the Il-62M, Il-86, and Tupolev Tu-154.
