Description

Rasheed Air Base, also known as Al Salam Air Base, is an Iraqi Air Force installation located 11 kilometers southeast of Baghdad in the Diyala Governorate.

The site was established after the First World War as a British military base. In 1922, it became the primary station for the Royal Air Force (RAF) under the designation RAF Hinaidi. The RAF began transferring operations to RAF Habbaniya in 1936, and the facility was handed over to the Royal Iraqi Air Force upon the completion of the transition in 1938. During the Iran-Iraq War, the base was targeted in Operation Kaman 99. Prior to 2003, the installation hosted the Iraqi Military Intelligence Military Brigade and the 6th Special Republican Guard Battalion. The base was bombed and subsequently captured during the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Following the invasion, U.S. Navy Construction Battalion forces occupied the site, and the 439th Engineer Battalion constructed Camp Falcon within the base perimeter in September 2003.

The Iraqi Air Force 109th Squadron is stationed at the base and operates Sukhoi Su-25 aircraft. Following the 2014 expansion of ISIS in northern Iraq, the base hosted an Iranian control center for the operation of Ababil surveillance drones and a signals intelligence unit.

Infrastructure at the installation includes ten hardened aircraft shelters and a hangar constructed on the western side of the facility between 2004 and 2009.
