Description
Schriever Space Force Base is located 10 miles east of Peterson Space Force Base near Colorado Springs, Colorado. Groundbreaking for the installation occurred in May 1983 as the Consolidated Space Operations Center. The facility became operational in 1985 as Falcon Air Force Station and was redesignated Falcon Air Force Base in June 1988. In 1992, the 50th Space Wing activated at the base following the inactivation of the 2nd Space Wing. The installation was renamed Schriever Air Force Base in 1998 in honor of General Bernard Schriever and received its current designation as Schriever Space Force Base on July 26, 2021.
The base is operated by the United States Space Force and is controlled by Space Base Delta 1. It provides command and control for more than 170 Department of Defense warning, navigational, and communications satellites. The installation is staffed by approximately 8,100 active duty, guard, reserve, civilian, and contractor personnel.
Primary units based at the facility include Space Delta 6, Space Delta 8, Space Delta 9, Space Delta 11, and Space Delta 12. It also hosts the 310th Space Wing of the Air Force Reserve Command and the Colorado Army National Guard's 100th Missile Defense Brigade. Other resident organizations include the National Reconnaissance Office Operations Squadron and the Joint Task Force–Space Defense.
Operational infrastructure includes Building 400, which serves as the primary control point for the Global Positioning System (GPS). The base houses the Missile Defense Integration and Operations Center, the National Space Defense Center, and the U.S. Air Force Warfare Center. Specialized facilities at the site include radome installations and the U.S. Naval Observatory Alternate Master Clock.
