Description
Stavanger Airport, Sola, located in Sola, Norway, serves as the primary airport for the Stavanger region. The airport commenced operations in 1937. During World War II, on April 9, 1940, Sola Airport was the initial target of a German attack on North Jæren, being assaulted by Messerschmitt Bf 110 fighters. Despite incomplete fortifications and an initial defense by approximately 80 Norwegian soldiers with outdated aircraft, the airport was captured by German paratroopers, marking one of the earliest wartime parachute assaults. Following its capture, the Germans rapidly landed troops, fuel, and materiel, transforming it into a significant logistical hub. After the war, the airport continued to operate. Today, Stavanger Airport, Sola, functions as a dual-use facility, accommodating both civilian and military operations. It is the third largest airport in Norway by passenger volume, offering flights to numerous domestic and European destinations.
