Description
Tamanrasset/Aguenar – Hadj Bey Akhamok Airport is located 3.6 nautical miles northwest of Tamanrasset in the Tamanrasset Province of southern Algeria. The facility was upgraded in the mid-2000s to integrate military infrastructure into the existing airport. The site has been utilized for American military operations.
The Algerian Air Force is the primary military operator of the installation. Military infrastructure includes ten hardened aircraft shelters, dedicated aprons, and personnel accommodation.
The 123rd Air Defense Squadron is stationed at the base, operating Sukhoi Su-30MK multi-role fighters to provide air defense coverage for southern Algeria. A reconnaissance unit operates Beechcraft 1900HISAR and 350ER aircraft equipped with surveillance systems. The base also hosts helicopter detachments operating Mil Mi-171Sh, Mi-24 Mk.III, and Mi-26T2 aircraft to support regional ground forces.
