Description
Tawang Air Force Station is located in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh, India. It functions as a heliport and an Advanced Landing Ground (ALG) for fixed-wing aircraft. The base is operated by the Indian Air Force (IAF) and is capable of handling transport aircraft such as the Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules. The establishment of Tawang AFS was driven by border security requirements along India's northeastern frontier with China. A radar system was installed at the base in 2010-2011. The Indian Army has undertaken upgrades to the AFS, including the development of a runway to accommodate large and heavy transport aircraft. Since 2016, the Indian Air Force has upgraded several ALGs in Arunachal Pradesh, including Tawang, making them operational by 2018. These facilities are also available for civilian helicopter and flight operations under the UDAN scheme for tourism and connectivity.
