Description
Tokachi Airfield is located in Obihiro, Hokkaidō, Japan, and is operated by the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF). The airfield is situated near JGSDF Camp Obihiro. Established in 1937 for the Imperial Japanese Navy, the site was transferred to JGSDF control in 1956.
The airfield began civil operations as Obihiro Airport in December 1964. Civil use of the facility ceased in February 1981 prior to the opening of the nearby Tokachi-Obihiro Airport in March 1981. Since the termination of commercial airline services, the airfield has continued to operate for JGSDF missions and general aviation.
Historical flight records include a landing incident on May 29, 1965, involving a Convair 240. The aircraft performed a landing with the right main gear retracted following a mechanical failure, resulting in no casualties.
