Description
Uiju Airfield is a Korean People's Army Air Force (KPAAF) installation located in Uiju County, Pyongan-bukto, North Korea. The facility is situated on the Yalu River plain, northeast of Sinuiju Airport and the Chinese border city of Dandong.
In May 1982, the airfield’s ordnance storage facility, consisting of concrete bunkers and vehicle storage buildings, began receiving STYX cruise missile containers and associated equipment. In January 1983, a contingent of Ilyushin Il-28 bombers was deployed from Uiju to Taetan Airport. Between March 2021 and August 2024, the airfield’s military functions were largely superseded by its role as the Uiju Quarantine Center. During this period, the site served as a decontamination facility for rail cargo containers entering North Korea from China.
The airfield is the station for the KPAAF 24th Bomber Regiment. Following the removal of quarantine infrastructure in August 2024, the facility resumed primary military operations. The base hosts a regiment of Harbin H-5 (Ilyushin Il-28) medium-range bombers and also houses Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21 aircraft.
Infrastructure includes a full-length parallel taxiway and a network of taxiways that provide access to dispersed aircraft stands. The facility maintains a dedicated ordnance storage area with multiple concrete bunkers and support buildings.
