Description
OKC Will Rogers International Airport, also known as Will Rogers World Airport, is a civil-military airport located in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. It spans 8,081 acres and is named after comedian Will Rogers. The airport first opened in 1911 as Oklahoma City Municipal Airfield and was renamed in Rogers' honor in 1941. During World War II, it served as a major training facility for the United States Army Air Forces, hosting numerous fighter and bomber units for initial training before their reassignment and deployment.
Today, the airport is operated by the Oklahoma City Airport Trust. It serves the Oklahoma City metropolitan area and is the busiest commercial airport in Oklahoma. The airport features a single three-level terminal with 17 departure gates across the West, Central, and East Concourses. A multi-phase expansion and renovation project began in 2001, concluding in phases with the new East Concourse opening in September 2021. Construction on a customs and immigration facility began in 2024, with international flights scheduled to commence in November 2025.
Will Rogers Air National Guard Base, located at the airport, is home to the Oklahoma Air National Guard's 137th Special Operations Wing, which operates the Beechcraft MC-12 Liberty aircraft, and the 146th Air Support Operations Squadron. The Oklahoma Army National Guard also conducts helicopter maintenance at the airport. Other government and military operations include the Federal Aviation Administration Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center, U.S. Department of Justice Justice Prisoner and Alien Transportation System facilities, and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations National Air Training Center. The airport also hosts various businesses, maintenance facilities, and the Ninety Nines Museum of Women Pilots.
