Description

Nanning Wuxu International Airport is an international airport serving Nanning, the capital of South Central China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. It is located 32 km southwest of the city center. The airport was built in 1962. During World War II, it was known as Nanning Airfield and was utilized by the United States Army Air Forces Fourteenth Air Force as part of the China Defensive Campaign (1942–1945). Its primary military function during this period was for reconnaissance, employing unarmed P-38 Lightning photo-reconnaissance aircraft to gather intelligence over Japanese-held territory. Detachments of fighter and bomber squadrons also operated from the airfield occasionally. It served as a supply point for the 2d Combat Cargo Squadron, which conducted air-drops of supplies and munitions to ground forces. At the conclusion of the war, transport aircraft also moved personnel and animals from the airfield. American forces ceased their operations and closed their facilities at the end of October 1945.
