Description

Yunnanyi Airport, also known historically as Xiangyun Airport and Beitun Airport, is a military airport located in western Xiangyun County, Yunnan province, China. During World War II, two airports existed in Xiangyun County: the original Yunnanyi Airport and Beitun Airport. The original Yunnanyi Airport was abandoned after 1949. Beitun Airport remained operational and was subsequently renamed Xiangyun Airport, and later again to the current Yunnanyi Airport.

During World War II, the original Yunnanyi Airport (also referred to as Yunnani or Siangyun Airfield) served the United States Army Air Forces Fourteenth Air Force as part of the China Defensive Campaign, beginning in September 1944. It primarily functioned as a transport hub, with C-46 Commando and C-47 Skytrain squadrons arriving from India, often after flying over "the Hump." These transport aircraft delivered supplies and equipment, including food and ammunition, to support Chinese forces. Additionally, USAAF F-4 (P-38 Lightning) aircraft conducted combat reconnaissance missions over Japanese-held territories from the airport in late 1944 and early 1945. American forces ceased their operations at the airport in July 1945. The airport continues to be a military facility.
