Description
Zagreb Airport is located in Velika Gorica, 10 kilometers southeast of Zagreb. Aviation operations in the region originated at Črnomerec in 1909, moving to Borongaj in 1928 and Lučko in 1947. The current facility at Pleso opened in 1962, with a passenger terminal added in 1966. During the 1991 Croatian War of Independence, the airport was a site of engagements between Croatian forces and the Yugoslav People's Army. It subsequently served as a United Nations transport hub for humanitarian supplies, hosting the British 24th Field Ambulance.
MZLZ d.d. operates the airport under a 30-year concession. The facility serves as the main base for the Croatian Air Force and houses the administration for Croatian Air Traffic Control. It functions as a hub for Croatia Airlines and a base for Ryanair.
Infrastructure includes a passenger terminal opened in 2017, covering 65,800 square meters across three levels. This facility contains eight air bridges, nine security checkpoints, and 45 check-in desks. A dedicated VIP terminal has been operational since 2008. The airfield is equipped with a CAT-IIIb instrument landing system. The apron provides parking positions integrated with visual docking guidance systems. The airport hosts aircraft including Airbus A320-series and regional transport types. Cargo operations are conducted by DHL Aviation and MNG Airlines.
